The American Dental Association advises flossing daily in order to minimize the build-up of cavity- and gum disease-causing bacteria and plaque within the mouth. While you may think that thoroughly brushing twice a day may do the trick, that’s just not the case. If you’re included in the majority of the population that doesn’t floss on a daily basis, it may be worthwhile to consider changing your ways, and here’s why.
Why is Flossing Important?
Flossing can be done with a special water flosser, flossing picks, or traditional string floss. No matter what technique you choose, this action can help prevent plaque and food debris from getting stuck and staying between the teeth, resulting in an increased risk of a number of oral health concerns.
What Problems Could Arise as a Result of Not Flossing?
Flossing just once a day can not only help keep your teeth healthy, but also your gums, which are the foundation for your smile. Even if you brush twice every day, the build-up of harmful oral bacteria and food debris can lead to gum irritation and even infection, ultimately putting you at a much greater risk of developing gingivitis, periodontitis, and cavities.
When you don’t consistently floss, you’ll likely notice several different symptoms of these common oral health issues arise, including:
- Tooth sensitivity
- Bleeding and inflamed gums
- Tooth discoloration
- Chronic bad breath
Tips for Flossing Consistently
There’s a reason why over half of the population in the United States skips out on flossing, and it’s mostly due to the fact that it’s cumbersome and can tack on a few extra minutes to their nighttime or morning routines. Fortunately, there are ways to help streamline and make flossing much easier.
String floss can be hard to weave between teeth and control, especially if you don’t have excellent fine motor skills. Instead, opt for flossing picks or even a handheld water flosser. These have been proven to be just as (if not more) effective than traditional dental floss at removing food debris and plaque from between teeth. Additionally, if you opt for a water flosser, you’ll be able to minimize your plastic waste!
Although flossing your teeth may add a couple extra minutes onto your bedtime routine, keeping your head from hitting the pillow as early as possible, the benefits you’ll be able to reap are priceless. Not only can you drastically minimize your need for treatments like cavity fillings and gum disease therapy, but you can also get the satisfaction of your dentist’s approval when you go in for a cleaning and your gums don’t bleed!
