How to Sleep Through a Nightmare Toothache

Imagine that you’ve had a long day, and you’re ready to finally collapse into your bed. But there’s this nagging pain near one of your teeth. You desperately hope it will fade once you’re lying down – and instead it gets worse!

What you have is a legitimate toothache nightmare. Since dental discomfort could mean all sorts of things, you’ll want to call your emergency dentist in the morning. In the meantime, though, you can scan this list of home remedies so you don’t have to toss and turn all night!

Take Pain Relievers that Reduce Inflammation

Assuming you haven’t taken any over-the-counter pain relievers already, take a type that also reduces inflammation if you have it available. Ibuprofen is a good example.

Inflammation is part of the body’s natural immune response and is meant to protect you from harmful infections or damage. However, sometimes inflammation can cause discomfort and irritation, especially when it’s located around your dental structure. If this reaction is contributing to your nightmare of a toothache, a pain reliever that aims to reduce it will likely be more effective than alternatives.

Apply a Cold Compress

Similarly, applying a cold compress to the ache will also help reduce inflammation. It can also temporarily numb the area, which will definitely take the edge off!

If you don’t have a “proper” cold compress, don’t worry. The home-remedy version is simply a few ice cubes wrapped up in a towel – or, if you don’t have ice cubes, a cold drink or empty glass that you’ve shoved into the freezer for a few minutes.

Elevate Your Head

This trick takes advantage of science. You see, facial pain like toothaches can become worse when you’re lying down. This is because gravity and blood flow are working against you, putting extra pressure on your teeth and sinuses. By elevating your head with pillows or by sitting up, you can lift some weight off your tender toothache.

Emphasis on “Temporary” Relief

Keep in mind that while extremely useful, these tips will only provide temporary toothache relief. Even in the event your ache suddenly disappears, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re cured of whatever caused the problem in the first place. It’s important that you remember to call your emergency dentist and schedule a timely appointment for diagnosis and treatment. Otherwise, you might find yourself in another dental nightmare!
